  • ICAR-National Bureau of Animal genetic Resources, Karnal successfully organized SAARC Regional Training on 'Molecular Genetic Characterization of Farm Animal Genetic Resources’ during 20-26 April, 2015. The training programme was jointly organized by the bureau and SAARC Agriculture Centre, Dhaka with the objective to share our expertise in the field of genetic characterization with neighbour SAARC countries. Total 16 participants imparted in the training programme; one from Bangladesh, two each from Pakistan & Maldives, three each from Sri Lanka and Nepal and five from India; with different back grounds, including from police forensic labs, academics, researchers.
Through training programme, the participants were introduced to the FAO recommended guidelines on genetic characterization of farm animals, covering the microsatellite markers and mitochondrial DNA sequence based genetic characterization, candidate gene analysis, expression profiling and microarrays. They also learnt about the wealth of Animal genetic resources and their attributes, field based phenotypic characterization work, their registration process and cryopreservation of germplasm for posterity as followed by India. The training programme was widely appreciated by the participants as well as SAARC Agriculture Centre, Dhaka and received wider coverage in print media.
